BASIC INFORMATION FOR PROSPECTIVE MEMBERS

How does the Council serve our Community, Church & State?
1. As an active organization within the Melrose Park community.
2. Supporting our citizens with mental retardation & learning disabilities with the annual Tootsie Roll campaign as a fundraiser.
3. Participating in the support seminarian program.
4. Sponsoring the community's annual children's Free Throw Contest.
5. Provide ushers at Church masses.
What does it cost to be a member?
1. Yearly dues are $25.00. You may pay them annually or semi-annually. There is an initiation fee of $15.00 payable with a submission of Application for Membership.
2. The Knights of Columbus has an OPTIONAL insurance program available to all members. The insurance is not a requirement for membership. Although, the KofC insurance program is one of the highest rated insurance programs in the nation.
How do I become inducted?
1. Induction into the Knights of Columbus is done in a three-stage program, with each called an exemplification. Each step is called a degree.
2. The 1st step is the First Degree or Admission Degree. The 2nd step is the Second Degree or Formation Degree. The 3rd step is the Third Degree or Knighthood Degree.
3. There is a Fourth Degree or Patriotism Degree that can also be attained. These are the men who wear the colorful regalia in honor guards and parades.
What do you do at meetings?
1. All meetings begin with a prayer, led by the Chaplain, or another member. This is followed by the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag.
2. We discuss any business before the Council pertaining to the Council, Church, and Community matters.
3. We discuss upcoming events as well as reviewing recently held functions and events. We are continually discussing possible new activities.
4. Meetings are concluded with a prayer, followed by light refreshments.
What sort of communication do you use besides meetings?
1. A bi-monthly newsletter keeps the members informed of happenings within the Council. It is mailed to each Council member and widows of deceased members.
2. You will receive a monthly magazine "Columbian" from the Supreme Council in New Haven, CT.
3. Our Council also maintains this web site. In addition, the Supreme Council and the Illinois State Council each have a web site.
What do we expect from you?
1. When possible, attend all regular Council meetings.
2. A commitment for some of your time and talents for fundraising projects such as with the Tootsie Roll Drive, etc.
3. Sponsor one new member during the year or reinstate a former member.
4. Work on committees as appointed and accept the responsibilities of these appointments.
5. Involvement in the above, during your first year as a member, will help provide your qualification for the Knights of Columbus Shining Armor Award.
